On Tuesday, August 11th (7:00 to 7:30 a.m. Pacific Time), please join the Center for Global Nursing to welcome Meshack John, BSN, RN, and Nira Matunda, BSN, RN, as featured speakers for the August 2026 Global Nursing Impact Series. They will share their expertise and experiences advancing perioperative nursing education through global collaboration, highlighting how partnerships, clinical education, and evidence-based innovation are strengthening perioperative nursing capacity and shaping the future of surgical care in Tanzania.
Meshack and Nira are Perioperative Nursing Officers in the pediatric operating rooms at Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. As founding faculty members of the hospital's Perioperative Nursing Training Program, they led the perioperative preceptor onboarding program and are training the next generation of perioperative nurses. Through their leadership, research, and innovation, they are helping establish perioperative nursing as a recognized specialty in Tanzania and across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Together, Meshack John, Nira Matunda, with Head of Department, Aneth Kaduma, and Director of Nursing Services, Redemptha Matindi, of Muhimbili National Hospital, along with BCH Critical Care nurses, Erin Brenner and Ruth Palmeri, received the 2025–2026 CGN Global Nursing Research Seed Award to co-develop and implement Muhimbili National Hospital's Surgical Preceptor Training Program. Built on shared leadership between Muhimbili National Hospital and UCSF, this collaborative initiative laid the foundation for Tanzania's first nationally standardized perioperative nursing curriculum and the first perioperative nursing training program in Sub-Saharan Africa.
