Clinical Global Scholars Program 

The Global Nursing Scholars Program is designed for UCSF nurses and advanced practice providers enrolled in the CGN Global Nursing Certificate Program, offering a unique opportunity to gain international experience by collaborating with global partners to improve nursing care quality. Selected participants will engage in hands-on learning, problem-solving, and cross-cultural exchange in a healthcare setting abroad. The program runs concurrently with the CGN Global Nursing Certificate Program.

Program Objectives 

  • Application of Course Knowledge: Empower participants to apply theoretical knowledge from the CGN Global Nursing Certificate Program directly to real-world health systems and nursing roles in a global context. 
  • Exploration of Global Healthcare Systems: Provide an immersive experience in global healthcare settings, enabling participants to collaborate with international partners and gain insights into diverse health systems, team dynamics, and standards of care. 
  • Cross-Cultural Collaboration: Strengthen existing partnerships with international nursing colleagues, fostering dialogue and collaborative efforts aimed at improving nursing practices across borders. 
  • Quality of Care Initiatives: Identify and explore a specific issue with a global partner, conducting a joint root cause analysis to drive improvements in quality of care. 
  • Reflective Practice: Participants will critically analyze their experiences to uncover cultural insights, compare nursing practices, and extract valuable lessons learned. 

Key Activities 

  • Pre-Departure Preparation: Participants will attend three virtual orientation meetings to meet their global partners and prepare for the international experience. A pre-travel checklist that they must complete prior to departure. 
  • Shadowing and Collaboration: Participants will spend significant time shadowing and working alongside their partner nurse at the AMPATH site. 
  • A3 and Root Cause Analysis: Participants will conduct a two-day root cause analysis on a specific issue identified at the partner hospital, collaborating closely with local staff to understand and address the problem.

Program Logistics 

  • Travel and Lodging: A stipend of up to $3000 will be provided to cover travel, visa, lodging, and food expenses for each participant.  
  • Nursing License: Participants must obtain a temporary nursing license or equivalent permission to be in the clinical setting at the partner site. Assistance will be provided to navigate this process.
